The American Thanksgiving

IMG_0915

Every Thanksgiving holiday the question always asked is, “What are you thankful for?”  and as Americans, we have a hell of a lot to be thankful for, not just on the last Thursday of November every year, but each and every day of the year.

But I wonder how many of us truly think about what we are thankful for whether on a daily basis or just on this one day of the year. My opinion is that not many Americans think about how thankful we should be to live as we do.  When I look around, watch other people, see their day to day routines, I don’t see thankfulness at all…I see a sense of “entitlement” from people I see and walk among.  The entitlement to expensive cars, big houses, expensive clothes, newest technology, higher wages and less work, dining out, and vacations.  Then the simpler things in life…heat and electricity for our homes, city water and sewage, the landscaping of our homes, supermarkets to purchase our food, shopping malls for shopping, the vast variety of personal care items we use, all what we consider necessities for our daily life.  What makes Americans feel they are entitled to these luxuries? Worse yet, what if we no longer were able to get all these items we feel we’re entitled to and take for granted rather then be thankful for?

So many people in other countries don’t have a tenth of what we have in America.  We waste more in one day than these people are able to afford.  They are the people that work ten or more hours earning pennies a day making the items we spend millions on in this country.  Women working for weeks and months, sleeping on the floors of the sweat shop to earn enough to barely feed the children they maybe get to see a few days out of a year.  They don’t live in decent homes, they don’t have automobiles, they don’t eat healthy foods off of china dishes or out of glass goblets, they don’t get new clothes whenever they feel they want them, they don’t get vacations or holidays or sick days, they don’t have medical insurances offered to them.  They are the slaves for our way of life, they work in sub-poor conditions, forced to meet production schedules, yet, they are thankful for whatever they may have or achieve to provide the way of life we Americans take for granted and feel “entitled” to.

As Americans, we do have so much to be thankful for, but we’re not entitled to the things we are able to have, and shouldn’t take what we have in our country for granted.  Next time you turn on your faucet or flush your toilet, be thankful. When you step out of the shower or bathtub, be thankful.  When you flip a switch and a light comes on, be thankful.  When you go to a supermarket and see shelves filled with food items, be thankful.  When you leave work after an eight hour day and able to spend time with your children, be thankful.  When you go to bed at night on a warm soft mattress, be thankful.  When you have food in your pantry’s and refrigerators not having to go hungry, be thankful.  For all the simplest of things…soap, shampoo, toothbrush and paste, be thankful.  Be “thankful” for all of these things, don’t take them for granted or as entitlement because your American, and always remember, one day we could lose all that we have to be “thankful” for today.

Wishing everyone a “thankful” and safe Thanksgiving holiday, and please, take just a few minutes to realize just how much we have to be “thankful” for in this country today and everyday.

  14. With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or
copyright violation? My site has a lot of unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it
up all over the web without my permission. Do you know any methods to help protect against content from being stolen? I’d genuinely appreciate it.
